GEMS The Girls Empowerment Movement (G.E.M.) provides leadership, mentorship and empowerment opportunities to girls across District 19. G.E.M. encourages girls to seek and celebrate their individuality by giving them a safe space, encouragement, structure and support to embrace their journey of self-discovery and self-love. Mentors help girls identify and apply their power and voice as individuals and as a group focusing on issues that are important in the lives of girls centered around the Core Values. Topics include learning about self, connecting with others, and planning for the future as strong, confident young ladies.

MBK

My Brother's Keeper
Empowering our young men to be the leaders of tomorrow through mentorshipMy Brother's Keeper (M.B.K.) provides leadership and mentorship opportunities to 400 boys throughout District 19. Mentors meet weekly with their small groups and once a month as a whole group. The focus of MBK is to show and help guide our young men to act and be seen in our community and in the world. Topics include social and emotional wellness, personal hygiene and respect for others.

Music

Our Music program is all about connecting, creating, and expressing through sound. We offer resources and experiences that help students explore rhythm, melody, harmony, and the joy of making music. From learning instruments to understanding music theory, our program nurtures creativity and builds confidence. Join us on a journey through music’s endless possibilities and discover the artist within!

Art

Our Art program celebrates creativity and self-expression, inviting students to explore a world of color, form, and imagination. Through hands-on projects, students learn techniques in drawing, painting, sculpture, and more, developing skills and confidence as young artists. With every brushstroke and sketch, our program encourages students to see the world in new ways and express their unique vision. Let’s create, explore, and inspire through art!

Basketball Team

Our fourth- and fifth-grade basketball team proudly represents P.S. 65 in competitive games against other District 19 schools. Now in our second year, the team continues to grow in skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship, giving students the chance to showcase their talents on the court while building confidence and school pride.

STUDENT COUNCIL

Being part of the student council presents a unique opportunity for young students to learn organization, leadership and teamwork skills and prepares them for later student government positions. Our intention is that by involving students in school functions beyond just their classrooms, the student council gives students an opportunity to demonstrate their talents while learning useful skills for the workplace and community.

Student council consists heavily of collaborating with school staff to organize school initiatives and share concerns, ideas and possible solutions from a student perspective. Students and parents will kindly be invited to virtual school workshops. Student council members will also lead peer-to-peer chats, reflections and school initiatives such as breakfast positive affirmations.

Student council is a group of students elected by their peers to address issues of concern and organize student events and activities. This year we have the following positions available for 5th grade:

  • Class Representative (one student from each class)
  • President
  • Vice President
  • Secretary

Responsibilities for each role:

Class Representative
Students attend all Student Council meetings and bring the ideas, interests, and concerns of his/her classmates to the meetings. They report back to the homeroom class regarding what was decided at a meeting. The student serves on committees and encourages other students to get involved in Student Council activities.

President
Students must promote themselves, communicating the benefits that other students will get from the presidential candidate. Once elected, the student president runs the council. The student president can call for meetings. To set a good example, presidents often must maintain high grades.

Vice President
The vice president also handles issues related to public relations and fulfills duties when asked by the president. The vice president is often responsible for directing committees. The vice president must maintain high grades, like the president.

Secretary
The class secretary's main responsibility is to keep track of records or minutes from meetings, functions, projects, and activities. This is a good position for students who are detail-oriented, organized, and good at communicating. Secretaries also tend to be in charge of communicating news to the student body and to the school administration.
